    Vietnam Airlines Carry-on Baggage Allowance

Vietnam Airlines runs one of the tighter carry-on policies in the region, and it's got stricter since May 2025. Know the numbers before you pack, not at the gate.

The 7kg limit for carry-on is typical for an Asian airline.

    Economy Class

    • One cabin bag, up to 10kg (22lb), max 56 x 36 x 23cm (22 x 14 x 9in)

    • One personal item (laptop bag, handbag), max 40 x 30 x 15cm (16 x 12 x 6in)

    • On most routes, your bag and personal item need to come in under 10kg (22lb) together, not each.

    • Flying to or from the US, Australia or Europe, you get to bring 12kg (26lb) combined.

    Business and Premium Economy

    • Two cabin bags, up to 10kg (22lb) each, same size limits as above

    • One personal item

    • Combined weight up to 18kg (40lb)

Go over on weight or size, and it gets checked in, usually at the airport rate for that route. Sometimes you get charged double if you're over on both counts at once. Vietnam Airlines has also been enforcing this harder around peak periods like Tết, when gate staff have less patience for bins stuffed with bags that should've been checked.

The easiest way around it: start with a lighter bag. A shell that weighs 1kg less than the one you're using now is 1kg more you can pack before you touch that 10kg ceiling. That means you don’t have to repack at the gate or deal with any surprise fee.

CabinZero backpacks start at just 600g, so nearly your entire weight allowance goes to what you're packing, not what you're packing it in. And they're built to fit cabin size limits across all major airlines, Vietnam Airlines included, so there's no gate-side guessing. Shop CabinZero backpacks now to fly hassle-free.

Vietnam Airlines Baggage Policy on Excess Fees

If your luggage exceeds the free Vietnam Airlines baggage allowance, you will be charged an excess baggage fee based on the weight and size of your bag, and travel route.

    • If your bag measures between 159 cm and 203 cm, the airline will consider it oversized baggage.

    • If it is over the allowed weight, you will be charged an overweight baggage fee.

    • Vietnam Airlines usually charges various fees if a bag is both overweight and oversized.

Standard extra checked luggage for domestic flights is VND 600,000 per piece; oversized baggage is VND 800,000 per piece.

Moreover, they charge excess baggage on international flights by travel zone and season.

For example, airport tariffs for flights to/from Vietnam and Thailand, Singapore, Malaysia, Laos, Cambodia, Indonesia or the Philippines are priced from around $160 per piece in peak time.

During peak periods, baggage on flights from Vietnam to South Korea, China, Japan, Taiwan, Hong Kong or India could be priced around $200 per piece.

Sports equipment And CPAP Rules to follow

Under the Vietnam Airlines baggage allowance, you can check in most sports equipment, but you should contact the airline at least 24 hours before departure to arrange the service.

    Accepted sports equipment

Vietnam Airlines accepts a wide range of sports gear as checked baggage, including:

    • Golf clubs

    • Skis

    • Diving equipment

    • Archery equipment

    • Fishing gear

    • Bowling equipment

    • Surfboards

    • Kites and sails

If your equipment contains hazardous components, such as oxygen cylinders for diving, you must also follow the airline's restricted baggage regulations.

Golf clubs have slightly different rules than other sports equipment. Depending on your fare type, you can take a set of golf clubs up to 23kg as part of your allowance on eligible domestic and selected international routes. Vietnam Airlines will charge additional fees for excess baggage weight for golf bags weighing more than 23 kg but not more than 32 kg.

    Can you bring CPAP?

Vietnam Airlines does not have a specific baggage policy for CPAP machines. The airline might consider CPAP devices to be medical equipment and may require medical clearance in some cases. So, check with Vietnam Airlines prior to travel in case you need any other documents or approvals. Pack your CPAP machine in your carry-on bag instead of checked baggage for the best protection.

How to Book and Check-in with Vietnam Airlines?

    Booking Process

Photo taken from Vietnam Airlines website.

We recommend booking your flight directly through the Vietnam Airlines website or mobile app rather than using third-party platforms. So you to compare fares across different travel dates, check for fare conditions.

When booking, please enter the name of each passenger exactly as it appears on the passport or ID to avoid problems during check-in. After your payment is complete, Vietnam Airlines will email you an e-ticket and booking confirmation with your reservation code (PNR).

    Check-in Process

In our experience, you should always check in online from 24 hours to 1 hour before departure to save you time at the airport. To do so, please go to the Vietnam Airlines website or mobile app, click on the Check-in section to:

    • Enter your booking reference (PNR) and last name.

    • Check your flight information and confirm.

    • Pick your seat (if applicable).

    • Download your boarding pass as a PDF or Wallet/Passbook pass.

If you’re checking baggage, don’t forget to check the Vietnam Airlines check-in baggage size and weight limits before going to the airport to avoid extra baggage fees. After you've checked in online, just go to the airline's bag drop counter to check in your luggage. If you're travelling with only carry-on baggage, you can skip the baggage drop.
